New Panama Canal Draft Restrictions Impact Container Allowable Weights

Due to the extended drought in the region of the Panama Canal and the resulting low water levels in Gatun Lake, The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) has announced a new DRAFT restriction of 44 ft effective April 30th, 2019.

As a result, carriers have placed new weight restrictions on container bookings that transit the Canal to:

  • 7500 kgs/20′ Container
  • 15000 kgs/40′ Container

This new restriction is implemented to avoid container offloading at the Canal and the resulting delays. It is expected to impact primarily larger, fully laden Post Panamax II vessels. This will also affect LCL shipments as LCL cargo is loaded into Containers with mixed commodities and most of the time, those containers far surpass the above weight levels.

We will keep WB Skinner clients informed on an individual basis regarding the status of your bookings.
